I got the best gift ever for my husband’s birthday: a brand new computer!
Yes, it was his birthday, and technically, he was given the computer, but since I’m the one who works from home, I always get the best computer in the house. So, here I am with a brand new machine!
The fun parts are obvious – this computer is so much faster! I can work with tons of windows and they all just fly! I love the new Windows 7 I have here too – neat design. This may sound silly, but I even love the new keyboard I got with this computer.
Still, switching computers is always a pain. It’s been three days now and I still keep finding little things I’m missing. A password here, a piece of software I forgot to install. An application that has issues with Windows 7. Not huge obstacles, but enough of them to make this a particularly annoying week, work-wise.
I wish they had found an easier way to switch. Our guy tried his best and transferred everything he could, but with a different OS, some things just need to be manually re-installed and/or patched up.
I wonder how other webmasters and bloggers are dealing with the same issue. How often do you upgrade to a new computer and how do you deal with the move? Drop me a comment if you have any tips – thanks!

My husband gave me a new Win7 computer for my birthday. The old one got too slow for certain applications and so he decided it was time to upgrade so I would be able to enjoy using the computer more again.
but I prefer the good old desktop computer. My old one really didn’t do it anymore after 6 years and I think that’s about the time frame most normal computer user will upgrade to a newer model. Professional high end technology and high end software users probably upgrade much sooner. Not to talk about the gamers, they anyway always have to have the newest and latest computer technology to experience computer gaming even better.
I don’t understand too much about computers and so I leave it fully up to him to set it up. He loves his laptop, the lazy bum, relaxing in his lounger chair having his legs up while working with his computer
Since there are certain tasks even my hubby only would do on a desktop, like e.g. image editing and our online store updates, he also is responsible for what programs will have to be installed and I can tell he is really good in updating stuff etc. Here I am more the lazy one. Anyway, this new computer is the fastest and so far the first one that never crashed. Hubby even managed to install some really old programs like Adobe Photoshop 6 that we can not afford to buy new and we actually were afraid we had to find some less expensive alternates for, without he had any major problems to solve to get them running again. He saved all important and personal files from the old computer on DVD’s and just transferred them to the new PC so I wouldn’t have to miss anything.
Thanks God, at least one of us is a computer geek, otherwise I don’t know if I would have thought about to save all the files we really need, if he wouldn’t remember it.
Well, now this new PC hopefully will last us another 5 or 6 years again.
I wish you much joy and fun with your new PC and hope you always can solve all the computer problems they ever might occur.

My old computer is a Pentium 4 desktop with Windows XP. Just last January, I got myself an Asus core 2 dou Notebook with 4G memory on Win7. It was not the latest but considering that my desktop is a 5 year old antique, the notebook was a God-send to me.
Yeah, there are indeed a few applications that need a few tweakings before it would work on the new OS. Thankfully, I know enough about computers and software to be able to make the move quite uneventful. Now, my son is assuming full control of the desktop, while I’m doing everything on my notebook.

We pass our old computers over to the kids as well. This time, since it was a gift, our friend gave us this new computer for our best one, which he gave to my husband’s twin brother (same birthday).
hey Anne,

While I like the speed of a new computer, I hate all the little issues that you point out… like passwords and program tweaks. That said, it’s about time to put my XP beast out to pasture and get a new Windows 7 machine. But I keep putting it off for the exact reasons you describe.
I did do one thing last time I changed computers… I made a text file of all the programs and settings I used when I set it up. But something tells me I haven’t kept that file up to date…

I would like to comment on your June 8 entry but comments are closed so I guess I can’t. Sorry, catch you around sometime.
I close old posts for comments, because I find they attract more spam than others. I think I may switch to 30 days rather than 14 then. Maybe even a bit longer, so that the posts still showing up on the main page still have comments open. So, thanks for the comment here, very useful!
