Great title, joke, and post.
I've got to remember your joke, plus Ned's joke about the "silent P". LOL. Thanks for making me smile. ~ Steve

Hi Anne
Great title for a post - got my attention straight away and here I am commenting.

Too true about big G, don't mess with them!
In my opinion there is no need for black hat tactics, well optimised text, titles and metatags should get results.

If you use All in one SEO plugin you can always change titles etc and check for results in the SERPS.
And don't forget to verify your site with Google.

My dad had a silly joke. When a word came up that had a silent letter like pseudonym he would say "It's silent like the P in swimming"

Your point doesn't just apply to Google and the internet. It amazes me how some people will practically advertise that "I am breaking the Law"

With that said, though, it can be a pretty fine line - where does advertising start and paid linking end?

Arguably with slipping in a no-follow? :)

I don't think the day will come when Google penalise people for rewarding contributors with do-follow links - but it would certainly be a sad day if it did!

Think of links as recommendations - by linking to a site you are recommending it to the people (as well as 'bots) who hit your pages - and suddenly it can start to feel like it might all be a bit futile if we never pass along any link juice at all!

I don't think any SEO expert does that. For one thing, a good SEO expert knows a link is just one more link... nothing to flaunt there.

Because of the sheer size of the pool, (it's an ocean) I think the lifeguard can not always be looking at your diving board all the time. That is why some folks out there seem to still get away with peeing from the diving board. :)

Nice post Anne. In the world of SEO nothing stays the same for too long, with boundaries changing and practices challenged. In my book this is healthy, but it is always wise to be as discreet as possible - unless you enjoy gambling with your customer's accounts!

I totally agree it's our decision how to run our blogs, but it's Google's decision how to run Google and who to send traffic to... As I see it, if a blogger doesn't care whether or not he's getting Google traffic, go ahead and climb unto the diving board!
