Don’t Pee from the Diving Board

This post is about SEO. Or rather, it’s about Google and Pagerank and the nofollow issue.

But first, a joke.

This guy gets thrown out of a swimming pool for peeing in the water.

“Why am I the only one you’re kicking out? I bet other people pee in the pool too!” he protests.

“Well, Sir, the others are not doing it from the top of the diving board.”

In other words, when you’re doing something that might piss off the lifeguard, be discreet about it. You may get away with it if you keep it quiet, but shout about it from the top of the diving board, and you may be leaving management no choice but to kick you out.

Ok, enough of the story. Now on to Google Policies.

Not about to explain the whole nofollow vs. dofollow issue again and my position on the topic. Click the links in the previous sentence to get the full picture – bottom line is I’m a dofollow blogger.

In my view, pagerank and the way “link juice” flows is Google’s problem. I prefer to show search engines the same thing as my surfers are seeing – if the link is on the page, I see no reason to nofollow it.

Swimming in Google’s Traffic Pool

If you want to swim in Google’s pool, you need to know the rules.

The one thing Google really frowns upon?

Selling or trading your “link juice”. I mean, these guys have teams dedicated to sorting out sites that sell outgoing links. By sorting out, I mean deleting them from the index. No Google traffic for you and you and you.

They do not want you to dabble in any form of exchange where you purposefully trade links for some sort of a benefit to yourself. Money is one form, but there are others too. How about more traffic to your blog? how about links on other blogs? how about tweets?

Now, here’s the thing. You can still exchange links, you can still allow links in comments, and you can still ask people to mention you in their tweets. Where I think you are treading on thin ice is when you go out and announce that you are giving “link juice” for it. That’s such a big no-no in Google books, why risk it?

I’m not saying you should nofollow your links. All I’m saying is I’d be wary of stating that I am purposefully giving out Pagerank or link juice as if it was some prize in its own right.

Much safer to offer traffic, reputation etc. I would leave the pagerank element out of the statement. Doing it is one thing, but from the diving board?

For the record: I do not advocate peeing in swimming pools!

  2. I think everybody is slowly turning to the DoFollow side of blogging and showing how much they appreciate other bloggers stopping by and commenting on blog posts, but at the end of the day, it’s our decision how we run our blogs and not Google ;)

I totally agree it’s our decision how to run our blogs, but it’s Google’s decision how to run Google and who to send traffic to… As I see it, if a blogger doesn’t care whether or not he’s getting Google traffic, go ahead and climb unto the diving board!

Nice post Anne. In the world of SEO nothing stays the same for too long, with boundaries changing and practices challenged. In my book this is healthy, but it is always wise to be as discreet as possible – unless you enjoy gambling with your customer’s accounts!

I don’t think any SEO expert does that. For one thing, a good SEO expert knows a link is just one more link… nothing to flaunt there.

Because of the sheer size of the pool, (it’s an ocean) I think the lifeguard can not always be looking at your diving board all the time. That is why some folks out there seem to still get away with peeing from the diving board. :)

  5. I always get a good giggle and a snort when noticing two things…

The bright shiny HELLO!!!! badges from payperpost type sites, and the ADVERTISE YOU LINK HERE sidebars with the CLICK THIS TO PAY ME FOR IT links under them.

With that said, though, it can be a pretty fine line – where does advertising start and paid linking end?

    Arguably with slipping in a no-follow? :)

I don’t think the day will come when Google penalise people for rewarding contributors with do-follow links – but it would certainly be a sad day if it did!

Think of links as recommendations – by linking to a site you are recommending it to the people (as well as ‘bots) who hit your pages – and suddenly it can start to feel like it might all be a bit futile if we never pass along any link juice at all!

My dad had a silly joke. When a word came up that had a silent letter like pseudonym he would say “It’s silent like the P in swimming”

Your point doesn’t just apply to Google and the internet. It amazes me how some people will practically advertise that “I am breaking the Law”

    Hi Anne
Great title for a post – got my attention straight away and here I am commenting.

Too true about big G, don’t mess with them!
In my opinion there is no need for black hat tactics, well optimised text, titles and metatags should get results.

If you use All in one SEO plugin you can always change titles etc and check for results in the SERPS.
And don’t forget to verify your site with Google.

    Great title, joke, and post.
I’ve got to remember your joke, plus Ned’s joke about the “silent P”. LOL. Thanks for making me smile. ~ Steve
